I had a simple thought for a serious matter the other night. Marriage means that you are saying “I want to be with this person for the rest of my life” ……………………………..
I wonder why everyone doesn’t put serious thought behind such a serious statement before saying “I do”? And why some say “I do” to such a serious commitment, but don’t take that commitment serious????????????????????????????????????????????????

I believe most people mean to make the commitment and they really do believe they will be able to keep their vows when they make them, but when the reality of those vows slap them in the face, they have to admit that they don't have what it takes to stay committed. I think it would make all the difference in the world if people took it more seriously about needing to rely on God and His Word to give them the strength, wisdom and endurance it takes to face the challenges that comes with marriage. Marriage is no joke -
that is something that I will never know!!
i think that people are more excited with the sound of marriage and not the commitment!!
I agree with both trina and Dreamy...
it takes real committment not just to each other, but to the word of God.
People lack the commitment to stay committed... it's about "me or that quick gratification" for better or else I'm gone-- instead of staying through thick and thin with mutual respect for the love that brought them together, the faith under which their vows were said, and the commitment to make it through the storm while dancing in the rain.
another theory, some marry for all the wrong reasons... get to know self, God, and the other before saying I DO. `Gotta have that common ground in which the foundation of your relationship is built upon-- you can weather it all when the 3 is ONE.
I'm guessing it's the heat of the moment - ya know?
My cousin told my wife and I this when we were about two days from
getting married. he said-"Don't prepare for the wedding, prepare for the marriage." -Wise Words indeed..I never forgot them.
Keisha... I don't know whats going on in the world -
People are getting married for 4 years max!!
Sadly, not too many folks take anything seriously anymore...
*SIGH*
EXCELLENT question...honestly I think some women, are so excited about getting "wifed up" and being called mrs. so-and-so that they don't look at the big picture...like the fact that they KNOW that relationship will not last.
When I was wearing my hair natural, I had this African women twisting it for me. She said she got married because it was expected. In her culture...you grow up...you get married.
After fifteen years of marriage...she advised me to NEVER EVER NEVER get married!!! LOL!
Marriage is what you make it. You have to be committed to stay committed. Nowadays, it's too easy to find an "out". You take vows to forsake all others (cheating), to be together in sickness and health (ride or die), for rich or for poor (ballin or broke), and in good times and bad (thru thick and thin). These vows are taken in the name of God.
I agree with Keith. You should prepare for a marriage...not a wedding. The wedding only lasts 25 mins. Marriage should be forever. That's like playing a football game and only preparing for the 1st play of the game! LoL. Whutchugonna do later in the game? That's how marriage is. You have to work at it...constantly!
On Sept 23, we'll celebrate our 8th year of marriage. When I think about that...I smile and feel blessed.
Good post!
LOL @ Opinionated Diva
Great post Kitten... and Keith spoke some ill words... I'll have to recite them to dude. He wants this big bang out wedding, while I want to go to pre-marital counseling... prepare for the marriage not the wedding... love that.
marriage is the bomb
i was engaged, but ex-phi lost the ring and she act like she didnt care i was furious - and she asked for another
because no one believes that it is really permanent anymore and that you really have to work to make it work anymore... divorce has been made so easy!
Thanks to everyone for your feedback...I love hearing from my blog family...good stuff fam!
I think people get married for the big wedding and not what is to come, i know that it means so much to me, so trust it will only be done once in my life and it's going to be to death do us apart!
I think that most people do not actually understand what a marriage is. They do not understand it is a duty and not an inconvenience. That is is a business and not all pleasure. That it is daily compromise and not a one time negotiation. That it is sex with that same person for the rest of your (sex) life and not merely the piece you got at home among others.
They do not understand that you MUST give up a lot. But you get a lot in return.
Marriage is a great institution, if you like being institutionalized!
